Extracting the QGP viscosity from RHIC data – a status report from viscous hydrodynamics

چکیده
We report recent progress on causal viscous hydrodynamics for relativistic heavy ion collisions. For fixed specific shear viscosity η/s, uncertainties in the elliptic flow arising from initial conditions, equation of state, bulk viscosity and numerical viscosity, and the treatment of the highly viscous hadronic stage and freeze-out procedure are analysed. A comparison of current viscous hydrodynamic results with experimental data yields a robust upper limit η/s < 5× 1 4π .

Hydrodynamic Approaches to Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions
First data reported by the STAR Collaboration at RHIC [1] has a significant meaning that the observed large magnitude of elliptic flow for charged hadrons is consistent with hydrodynamic predictions [2]. This suggests that large pressure possibly in the partonic phase is built at the early stage (τ ∼ 0.6 fm/c) in Au+Au collisions at sNN = 130 and 200 GeV. This situation at RHIC is in contrast t...
متن کاملCausal viscous hydrodynamics in 2 + 1 dimensions for relativistic heavy-ion collisions
We explore the effects of shear viscosity on the hydrodynamic evolution and final hadron spectra of Cu + Cu collisions at ultrarelativistic collision energies, using the newly developed (2 + 1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic code VISH2+1. Based on the causal Israel-Stewart formalism, this code describes the transverse evolution of longitudinally boost-invariant systems without azimuthal symme...
متن کاملViscous hydrodynamics with bulk viscosity – uncertainties from relaxation time and initial conditions
Bulk viscosity suppresses elliptic flow v2, as does shear viscosity. It can thus not be neglected when extracting the shear viscosity from elliptic flow data. We here explore uncertainties in the bulk viscous contribution to viscous v2 suppression that arise from presently uncontrolled uncertainties in the initial value of the bulk viscous pressure and its microscopic relaxation time.
متن کاملViscosity at RHIC: Theory and Practice
Hydrodynamic behavior and the associated discussions of viscosity at RHIC has inspired a renaissance in modeling viscous hydrodynamics. An explanation of Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics is presented here, with an emphasis on the tangible benefits compared to Navier Stokes.

Collective flow has been observed in heavy ion collisions, with a large anisotropic component, and ideal hydrodynamic calculations had significant successful in describing the distribution of produced particles at the RHIC experiments. In order to account for this near ideal fluid behavior, the shear and bulk viscosity of the quark gluon plasma (QGP) must be computed from first principles in a ...
